ENTER THE PRETENDER: Christie Floats in for 2024

November 16, 2021

Here we are, practically on the eve of the 2024 elections, and Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey, is floating his candidacy. Hey, it’s me, he’s purring to king makers. I’m Trump’s best friend. I’m Biden’s worst enemy. And I’ll eat Xi Jinping for breakfast.

The pretext for his sudden emergence is not to challenge Donald Trump’s GOP lock but to peddle his new book, Republican Rescue: Saving the Party from Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden. A mouthful, but [insert fat joke here].

From “Morning Joe” to “Fox & Friends,” the questions are pointed or puffy, depending, but Christie’s plays are practiced.

  • So are you running for president, they ask? I might, he concedes with disarming candor.
  • And what about Liz Cheney? Raw deal, right? Well, I like Liz, he deflects without blinking.
  • And what about Trump? Um, does he know? Look, I was first in line to support Donald. We’re friends, he recasts. He was so much better than Hillary could ever have been, a wink to Hillary haters.
  • Even for COVID and January 6th? Hey, the point is for Republicans to look forward, he deflects again.

So begins another cycle. In this case, the careful lofting and gauging of a presidential trial balloon and what may be another pretender to the Republican nomination.
